Synopsis
Born in Paris in 1944 Boltanski has spent his artistic life working with the most ephemeral of materials - newspaper clippings, photographs, found snapshots, clothing, candles, light bulbs, old biscuit tins - to examine and to mark our transitory passing here on earth. Using the photograph as a central image of his work he explores its perceived truth and how it is often used as a shield against death. By mining memories that can be conjured from these innocent photographs he demonstrates their significance to our understanding of memory, loss and death. In this volume 100 biographical statements are put opposite full-page photos and documents, arranged as collages: 'He left school very early on and made spelling mistakes, he liked to brag about that' 'He worked very little or at least that's what he said, he claimed that he lived a retiring life that he spent his time in public gardens or in museums in winter because they were heated'
