Product Description

Synopsis

Robert Polidori, often considered an architectural photographer, is in fact a photographer of habitat. On the surface his subjects are buildings, but at the core his lens is focused on the remnants and traces of living he finds scattered in hallways, left in back rooms and worn on facades. Havana is a particularly rich setting for Polidori's inquiries. The curves and columns that line the streets refer to past eras and speak of the political, social and economic forces that have driven the city to its present condition. Through his rigorous and sensitive examination - facilitated by a sense of color and composition that makes his photographs feel like vivid memories - Polidori delicately peels away the patina of daily living and reveals the juxtapositions that create a city's identity. In this city the peddler lives where the countess once resided; children dance and tumble where merchants conducted their business. Each photograph is a discovery and a fragment of the city's biography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every page sparkles with glamour, beauty & a certain chique!, 21 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I can barely describe the ammount of beauty captured in this book. It is just amazing to me that one place should exist that encapsulates so much wonderment. Every page in this book is a delight to the eye. Every photograph looks like the most beautiful film you have seen, so false and staged, yet filled with a slightly worn glamour.
After reading this book I am now looking in to all of Robert Polidori's photography. Truly an amazing photographer, stealing perfect moments for ever.
If you are at all interested in fashion, design, architecture, then I recommend you at least view this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!, 6 Jun 2006
By Horsey (Bristol) - See all my reviews
Having been seduced by an exhibition of Robert Polidori's photographs recently, I was keen to explore his work more extensively. The photos in this book are sumptous, mesmerising, complex in their detail and a magnificent record of Havana. At times his photographs are almost painterly and his portraits never feel intrusive or sneering (like some contemporary photographers' work.)Fortunately, while some photography books split prints across pages, this has been beautifully laid out on fine quality paper.Although this book is the most expensive I have ever bought,it is worth every penny!
