1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing is the word -, 2 Oct 2002
By amy reese (London) - See all my reviews
As someone who values quality, I was definitely used to better with Taschen. Sure no pretence on the copy which is weak, but the most disappointing feature is the fact that the images are all in all supplied by the hotels; as a result the book looks certainly more like a collection of hotel brochures with a little twist rather than a book. Why pay good money for that? It seems to me that the authors did not in some case - after reading the text - visit a number of the properties probably, or if they did, well, little came out of it. Obviously it is a commercial attempt to copy Hip Hotels, but frankly not worth it. The only positive is that as it is supplied it is a little more up-to-date. But I would rather use the web in that case, or stick to the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taschen, doing what it does best., 1 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Taschen, doing what it does best: high quality print, design and visually stunning imagery, supported by brief, slightly quirky (multilingual) text. All this for two-thirds of the price of a normal coffee table book and only marginally more than the HIP Hotels series - which it is clearly emulating. The text isn't as in-depth as the HH series, but it is more objective in tone. However, with images and production as sumptuous as this, who needs copy?

My one criticism - the rather uninspiring cover image; it doesn't do the book justice. Also a few more outlandish locations would have been good. Still, this is a very rewarding book and I eagerly await the rest of the series. (Am just hoping my coffee can take it).

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!, 31 Oct 2006

I stumbled accross this book in a local specialist library and have been thoroughly impressed by it's quality. This impressive book is full of breath-taking images- as you wish you were staying at one of these remote locations. I accept that it may be interpreted as a collection of hotel brochures- but that is no criticism, for I would be on the phone to Taschen today trying to book a reservation at any of these beautiful hotels. As an aspiring hotelier- this is inspirational. Wow!
