5.0 out of 5 stars 'Why you are right not to like modern art.', 5 Nov 2009
By Maha Upasika Gotami (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the title of the Introduction. Spalding has written, he says, for those who enjoy art, who want to remain open-minded, but can see very little merit in what is being promoted as art today. This no simple emotional knee-jerk book, but a reasoned explanation, from someone who was a gallery curator and director for thirty years, of how modern art came into being, has been promoted, organised, directed, manipulated and exploited from 1937 to 2003. He puts into words the confusion one feels when going in to see a praised exhibition and finds oneself wondering 'why on earth would anyone bother to do that, and how could any reasonable person pay millions to buy it?' A much needed version of the Emperor's New Clothes.
