Pollmann's book is a much-needed contribution to walking literature in Norway. Most of the walks are day-walks (in contrast to the Cicerone guide which is aimed at backpackers or hut-to-hutters). Each walk has an itinery, sketch-map and approximate time, the format is not too dissimilar to that used in the SMC Munros guidebook.

The book has been translated from its original German by a German, so one or two phrases will raise a smile: "Gummistoller boots" instead of "wellies" is an obvious example. However, where it matters - on the mountain details - the translation is faultless.

My main criticism is that Pollmann's timings are somewhat optimistic. As an example, to go from Spiterstulen up to Galdhopiggen (Norway's highest mountain) and back down again in a total of 6 hours is a tough challenge. Treat the times with caution - Norwegians mountains are a lot rougher and stonier than most British ones.

My other main comment is that a fair proportion of the walks are short walks - so that not all the walks in the book are grand days out (equivalent to a Munro for instance). For the larger hills, the book concentrates on the more popular ones. Anyone wanting to go off the beaten track will need to do their own exploring, or read between the lines in Slingsby's book instead.

Notwithstanding these minor faults, this book is highly recommended, especially for someone going to Norway for the first time.
