Glaswegian photographer David Rankin was the typical English enfant terrible. While at art school in London, he refused to let his teachers assess his work and at his first solo exhibition, he caused a minor scandal when he prominently displayed a photograph of his erect penis. His ascent in the world of fashion photography began after he founded the London-based independent magazine "Dazed and Confused". Rankin's cover portraits of celebrities from the cutting edge of fashion, photography, music, film, art and culture are astonishingly intimate. The photographs in this collection manage to combine an in your face sexuality with an almost surreal humour - a distinctive style that never fails to shock.

The first thing that struck me about this 'book' is its format, its BIG, maybe 400mm high, the cover is just the same kind of paper, its a sort of magazine series on photographers published in Germany and the text is in both languages. Using such a big formate has highlighted the graininess of some of the pictures which made me think it was taken by 35mm film which seems strange.

Some of the photos of models on the leather couch in all sorts of close-ups are quite captivating, sometimes exciting for what you cant see as much as what you can.

I worry about that more with Mario Testino who does not seem to be me to be especially skilled as a photographer, maybe skilled at getting a certain kind of shot but not a techical expert - in this work you will probably find some works which inspires you and some which leaves you feeling cold. The book is pretty good value for the format and I'm planning to buy some more in the series. If nothing else its a good way of deciding whether you like the work of Rankin - his surname is Weddell by the way and good luck searching for him.
