Product Description

Review

"I would recommend this book highly for dipping into and for a group library. Some of the more unusual material would be hard to scrape together from other sources and is particularly useful to have in one place. At around fifty pounds, it is a good purchase for a new astrobiologist or student expecting to study astrobiology in depth." (The Astrobiology Society of Britain, January 2008)

"...the book would be a valuable addition to the library of any institution concerned with microbiology."  (Microbiology Today, November 2007)

"This up–to–date resource is based on lectures developed by experts...and carefully edited by the leading astrobiologists within the European community."  (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin, December 2007)

"...this is an elegantly written and edited book ... it is a good value for individual purchase."  (Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres, December 2007)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and very accessible introduction, 13 Jun 2007
By Andreas P. Rauch - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In 1995, the first planet outside of our solar system was discovered. By now, hundreds are known, and the question if there is complex life beyond Earth is a far less philosophical one than it seemed a decade ago. Scientific inquiries into life's origin on Earth, its existence and its pre-forms throughout the universe, have been started by scientists of many several disciplines. Their new field has been dubbed astrobiology.

This book gives an extensive introduction and overview on astrology: The state of early Earth, early forms of life and their traces are discussed. Comets and mirco meteorites as well as hot vents might have been the sources of amino acids and other complex organic molecules. An overview of different types of worlds is given, and alternative chemistries of life are discussed. While it is quite clear that Mars does not harbour any complex lifeforms today, this is not as certain for microbes. Gas giant moons as Jupiter's ice-covered Europa or Saturn's Titan might also teem with life forms completely different from what lives in our garden.

The hunt for independently evolved life forms would also help in deciding which conditions and ingridents had been necessary for Earth's life to develop. This would shed some light on the question if our universe is teeming with "garden" worlds full of complex life forms, or nearly void, with the notable exception of our homeworld.

Horneck's and Rettberg's book is intended for scientists - not only, but primarily to astrophysicists, chemists and biologists. It is not too technical, so anyone with a good layman's background in astronomy will probably find it useful and interesting. Nevertheless, a scientific background will be helpful to understand the finer details.

Lots of illustrations, discussions of key experiments, a clear structure and even clearer writing make this book very accessible. Each chapter has a short introduction, a handy list for further reading, and has been written by a reseacher actually working on the questions covered. Still, the result is a complete course, not only a collection of unrelated essays, a great accomplishment of the editors.

This is a great book on a fascinating subject - and I recommend it wholeheartedly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good but the price!, 21 Aug 2007
By Dr. P. J. Henney "pjhenney" (Sheffield UK) - See all my reviews

As noted a very good introduction to, and summary of, this very exciting subject. The author are to be particulary commended for including a CD with lectures and other additional material. Is very readable and readily comprehensible, even to a recovering geochemist such as myself!
My main quibble is with the price, £50 for a paperback, which is going to make it a bit of a reach for students.
