"Rendering with Mental Ray" is not a book that expains step by step how to achieve materials or lighting effects. It is mearly an enhanced glossary or guide to the terms and technquies utilised by the rendering engine.

This book contains plenty of sample code, but never explains how to achieve effects such as Sub Surface Scattering, although it does explain what each shader is and what it can achive just not how to do it for yourself.

If you wish to create shaders and understand the theory behind it then this book is for you.

Myself I wanted to better understand how to use Mental ray that is now bundled with 3ds max, and for that I will have to look elsewhere.
