Product Description
Synopsis
Acoustic emission is a noninvasive, nondestructive testing technique that deals with the noises made when materials deform or fracture. This monograph examines the capabilities and scope of the technique ranging from its use in the laboratory as a research tool, to the testing of reinforced plastic piping. The information needs of the acoustic emission practitioner are examined, including location, sensors and the handling of results. The science base of the technique is elucidated, particularly stress waves, interfaces, and sources and standards. One chapter is devoted to the present most challenging use of acoustic emission, that of its application in the aircraft industry. Special attention is also given to the future of acoustic emission and those methods and procedures currently undergoing development. The combination of scientific theory and practical applications evident in this work make it an excellent resource for both acoustic emission practitioners, undergraduate students and graduate level students.

First Sentence
During the past 40 years, extensive development in NDT has taken place-the traditional methods based on ultrasonics, radiography, eddy currentss and penetrants have especially benefited from advances in instrumentation, and techniques based on different physical phenomena such as exoelectron emission, holography, thermograhy, nuclear magnetic resonance etc have shown promise of eventual evolution as practical NDT. Read the first page
