5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, 20 Aug 2002
If you often see photographs in newspapers or magazines and think 'I would love to have taken that shot' then this book is for you.

Exclusively Black & White, great shots are displayed with informative dialogue BY THE ACTUAL PHOTOGRAPHER on how and why they made the shot. There's general information on the gear and film used, but most importantly there is insight into the creative thought involved. Occasionally, there are details on print or display techniniques when needed. But the text never gets bogged down in techno-babble.

All the shots are excellent - the kind that stop you turning the pages of a newspaper to read the story that lies behind the photo. In other words - perfect photo-jounalism.

The book can be read by dipping in on a shot-by-shot basis, as each shot and accompanying text occupies 1-2 pages. But I found myself studying page after page in succession, and then revisiting favourite images later.

I may never produce anything that comes close to these photographs, but reading this book has closed the gap just a little, and more than any other book I can recall reading of late.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, 29 Jan 2003

This is a gripping, beautiful book. Those who are put off by the title thinking that photojournalism must be about pictures of people being shot etc - think again. This fantastic book has beautiful illustrations of potraiture and story telling. The clarity of the illustrations is top class with each plate being accompanied by text of how the photo was taken, hints on composition and developing and what the picture meant to the photographer.
As soon as this book arrived I was gripped wanting to absorb every picture, every comment. Fantastic!
