Product Description

Product Description

Making technology invisible, a seamless part of our lives, is the job of today's designers. In an aircraft seat, a microwave, a mobile phone or a piece of clothing, we can transport complex technology to be of service wherever we need it. A well-designed product is usually the result of hundreds of carefully formed decisions regarding its functionality, our needs and lifestyles, as well as our emotional response to colour, texture and form. The stories behind today's top design icons are explored here through 50 smart designs. The text is beautifully illustrated with the products at their various stages of evolution using sketches from the designers themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good presentational reference, but lacks technical detail, 1 Mar 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
For presentation this book get 5/5, this title shows the design process adopted by design consultancies in presenting and designing consumer goods. It is very interesting to see how these designers sketch ideas in such a different contrast. E.g. A Nike sports watch is featured in this book, has concept design sketches detailing the user function, this sketch sheet is presented by biro-marker renderings. Another product, The Titan washing machine, the sketches are fag-packet sketches, interesting to see how simple but effective these are, although not the most aesthetic. Others such as Psion Wave Finder, Sony Network Walkman uses Mac-based concept layout. There are some fantastic marker rendering in this book too.

This book goes to prove the best way to communicate an idea is not the way the sketches look, but really what the sketches are trying to communicate.

Although the book excels the presentation aspects, the book lacks any technical information on the products featured. It would have been beneficial to a reader to know how these products are 'smart'. The title fails to explain how these products are 'smart'. Yes the book shows innovative product design, but these designs are more industrial design led rather than space-age innovation.

All-in-all, this title is very good, and worth being placed onto your shelf. It will give some good inspirations to your sketch sheets and even that ultimate product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very inspirational for a product designer, 17 Jan 2002
By A Customer
It is a well designed book. Reviewing today's cutting edge product design one by one and explaining the process and how it was achieved.
Many color photo and even original design sketches.
Also price of the book is attractive.
