4.0 out of 5 stars An enchanting story told in an enchanting setting., 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This book is the reason why i carried on with my French A-Level! Its is the enchanting story of the childhood of Marcel Pagnol. It is written in such a way that you feel you are Marcel and his family are yours. Reading this book on a hot summers day takes you right back to the turn of the last century when Marcel was an inquisitive 8-year-old. He tells the story through the wide eyes of a small boy leaving the town for the first time and discovering a wonderland in the countryside of Provence.

Even if you've never been to Provence, let alone France the descriptions are so vivid that you can almost see the olive trees, feel the hot sun on your skin, hear the cicadas and smell the lavender as you brush against it. Even though this is the story of Marcel Pagnols' boyhood holidays you are unable to put this book down and wish it will never end, but sadly it does. It would be impossible to read one or the other books, they must both be read as one and you are left wondering how two such wonderful stories could end that way. No matter how many times you read these books, you will find yourself hoping that the ending will change this time. The only reason that i haven't given five stars is because this book is so much better in French! I have read both the original and the translation into English and there is definately something lost in the translation. This is such a shame for people who are learning French as some of the colloquialisms can be hard to understand. Nevertheless this book is worthwhile perservering with (but keep a tissue handy for the end).

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming autobiography of a boy's maturing., 27 Mar 2001
This book is written as an autobiography - the main theme running through it is that of the author's infancy, and his maturing in both age and thoughts. This is a good read, although I would recommend reading the book also in english if not a native french speaker as some of the language is difficult to understand / written in dialect of provence, so to speak. A charming story with use of subtle humour in places.
