Product Description

Book Description
The estimated three to six million Americans who reside abroad are a diverse group, with many reasons for going overseas. All have stories to tell of cultural diversity, national identity and the complex emotions resulting from living in foreign societies. This collection of 47 stories provides refreshing and sometimes profoundly different perspectives on America, reaffirming the strength and diversity of our national character. Readers will discover how national identity can be tied to a simple birdfeeder, how a naked man in Penn Station teaches an important lesson to a returning American, and much more. This book is their book, and yours, confirming how the millions of Americans living overseas make a difference in all our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ubiquity of Homespun American Eloquence, 12 Mar 2007
Of all the assets that the United States so generously shares with the rest of the world, nothing comes anywhere close to that of the pool of talent represented by the 4 million U.S. citizens current living and working abroad. This book is a perfect manifestation of the ubiquity of this spirit and experience. Each tale contributes a different perspective on what it takes to adapt to the myriad challenges that arise when you pack up and leave to start a new life far from home. You will enjoy it and want to take it with you on your next trip. Bravo, ACA, for a project so well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars So diverse and so American, 2 May 2006
By J. Finn (Madrid, Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
America's leading export may be quality writers. Forty-seven of them appear in this book, with a wider range of topics and situations than I imagined. A guy on a failed business trip in China. A volcano in Iceland. The reasons Italians don't have bird feeders. Hopes for citizenship dashed in Germany. Camel dung in an Iranian garden. Expect surprises.
