This is an excellent book. If like me you read French just competently, then you will not struggle with a book that has one of the most gripping and original plots I have encountered in a while. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down!

I have NOT read the book, in fact, but if you can get the film (the main actors are shown on the book cover) with subtitles, I can recommend it highly and, yes, it is pretty scary: eugenic selection, a crazy institute in the valleys of the French alps, bloody murders etc...I recorded my copy off the TV but it is available in French (maybe with subtitles) on the French Amazon website. ADDENDUM: I find that the film is now available on DVD as The Crimson Rivers, with subtitles though, not dubbed and still, therefore, in French language.
