I am learning french, so when I was given such a famous french story to read I was thrilled - even if it has been adapted for french-speaking children with a vocabulary of 500-900 words!

For adults like me, or for children this book is great, because it explains unusual words or phrases in footnotes and in the back of the book. It enabled me to read a proper french story (rather than a children's one) without a dictionary for the first time, which is a rewarding experience.

There are activities in the back of the book, aimed at children, but useful to check your comprehension of the text. Also, there's further information about the story, putting it in context of when it was written, cinema, television and theatre productions and a list of websites with more about Victor Hugo.

The only drawback was that the friend who gave it to me didn't realise that it was Volume 2 of 3! Luckily, there is a brief summary of Volume 1 in the beginning.
