Synopsis

Jerry Dumbarton is a normal, fit, thirty two year old, who lives in Cambridge. Unbeknown to him, his whole life is about to change as he is the Chosen One, the person who has been selected to replenish the current Good Lord and to live for a thousand years. But first he must prove himself worthy; he must find and solve the clues that lead to the Prize, the object that will bring peace and happiness to the race of man, and then he must recover it from where it has been hidden these last thousand years. Jerry is supported by his two closest friends; Julia Evans, Jules to her friends, an attractive and intelligent thirty one year old blonde, and Pete Potts, a thirty two year old computer genius. Together the three of them embark on their journey, hunting down the clues and solving them in order to discover the pathway to the Prize. During their journey they meet the current Good Lord and his five Guardians, they come across the Evil Lord and his two side-kicks, and they learn more about what is in store for the race of man, and some important hitherto unknown facts about our past.Join Jerry, Jules, and Pete in their adventure, and, if you want to, you can try to solve the clues for them, before they do, for everything you need to know to find the prize is in the text, although an Internet connection would also be useful. Can you find the prize?

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written Fantasy Novel set in our own time., 13 Feb 2009
By Peadar Creagh (ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Life goes on as normal in Cambridge, England. Go to work, meet your friends, eat lunch or go to the pub. Good and evil are in constant turmoil, each trying to get ahead of the other in their influence on the world. But unknown to everyone, there are supernatural forces who direct this battle, the Good and Evil Lords. The Evil Lord is immortal whereas the Good Lord need to be replenished every 1000 years where someone new tales on the responsibility and they are transformed into a replacement Good Lord. To do this, the selected one must discover themselves and their anointed path by going on a quest to uncover a series of clues and solving them. Jerry Dumbarton from Cambridge has been selected and with his friends Jules and Pete embarks on the path to becoming the Good Lord. This book charts this journey, the effect is has on their lives and their voyage of self discovery, all the while the Evil lord tries to thwart their quest.
This book is a crossover between a normal novel set in the world of today with fantasy elements where the logic of our world as we know it is challenged. Unlike the majority of other novels in the fantasy space, it is firmly set in our existing time where everything is normal other than those few characters who are a part of the fantasy realm. It is well written and continues at a nice pace throughout. There is a clear attempt to develop the characters in such a way as you get to know them. There are a series of puzzles to be solved but these are incidental to the character development. Let the characters themselves solve them for you and go with the flow. While the storyline does meander through their lives there is a clear logic to it and an end goal. However, the plot is not resolved at the end of the book and we will have to wait for a sequel I guess.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Novel With A Difference, 2 Jun 2009
By Bookworm (London) - See all my reviews
The last review is a good precis of the storyline in The Quest for the Prize. I appreciate how the author put thought into keeping the readers' attention with the carefully thought out clues the characters have to solve.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this 'different' kind of novel and am looking forward to the sequel. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to read something that is not too heavy but still has something unpredictable to offer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to read something a little different, 7 Sep 2009
I too enjoyed reading this book, mainly because it is a mystery that gives you a chance to solve the clues along the way. Although you'd need a pretty devious mind to suss them out before the characters do. I think Mr Dyne could do with a better proof-reader though, as there were a number of spelling / grammatical errors along the way...unless of course they too are clues...

I really enjoyed 'The Quest for the Prize'. It was hard to put down and the twists and turns keep you guessing. The author has a fresh approach and I can't wait for the next book.
