Product Description

Product Description
The strength of Java is no longer in the language itself; it's in the Java Platform (the JVM, JDK, and rich frameworks and libraries). But recently, the industry has turned to dynamic languages for increased productivity and speed to market.

Groovy is one of a new breed of dynamic languages that run on the Java platform. You can use these new languages on the JVM and intermix them with your existing Java code. You can leverage your Java investments while benefiting from advanced features including true Closures, Meta Programming, the ability to create internal DSLs, and a higher level of abstraction.

If you're an experienced Java developer, Programming Groovy will help you learn the necessary fundamentals of programming in Groovy. You'll see how to use Groovy to do advanced programming including using Meta Programming, Builders, Unit Testing with Mock objects, processing XML, working with Databases and creating your own Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs).

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for anyone interested in Groovy, 3 Aug 2008
By R. Hart "Hates_" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Even though I had been coding Grails sites for the past seven months I never really felt like was taking full advantage of Groovy's capabilities. This book was a real eye opener! Closures, MetaProgramming and Builders had all been a bit of a vague subject but the examples are extremely easy to understand and make the process of learning quick and interesting.

This is one of the few books that cuts straight to the chase and tells you what you need. This is a problem, this is how you might do it in Java, this is how you can do it in Groovy and this is how you can make it even Groovier. This book was A-ha after A-ha after A-ha! It's always a pleasure to read books that start your mind racing as to how you implement that code snippet you just learnt into your current projects or how things that had stumped you in the past turn out to have elegant and simple solutions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - at a great price, 10 Jul 2009
This book would be worth it's cost should it cost twice as much. So many technical books cost large amounts and disappoint, yet this is a real treasure.

The books style is concise, informed and lucid. The author writes with humour without clouding the issues and uses meaningful examples that really illustrate his text.

If you are a Java programmer, then this book is likely to cover all your needs from the language itself, through using Groovy and on to advanced topics such as MOP and DSLs.

This book shows how much of an advanced, serious language Groovy is, despite its name.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to meta-programming in Groovy., 28 Mar 2009
By Mr. Jeremy Flowers "Looking for Java work" (Milton Keynes, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's unusual to find a technical author that possesses such clarity. A thoroughly engaging read that is easy to learn from. Devoid of fluff. Rich with crystal clear concise examples. Truely worthy of the "pragamatic" label. I particularly liked:
1) The coverage of MOP.
2) The testing chapter. The clearest distinction between mocks and stubs I've seen.
3) Venkat's analogy of XML to a human. :-) "Cute when small. Annoying when bigger!".
Clarity and wit. A great combination! Highly recommended.
