5.0 out of 5 stars Triumph over adversity, 8 Jun 2009
Anyone who thinks that romance is dead must read this book. In 1955 two students met at a table in a NY university library, and it was love at first sight. Immediately they encountered adversity. He was a foreign student, a Syrian; she was from a conservative old American family. But love triumphed and over 50 years later, she - the author - has written this captivating story of their marriage and their subsequent lives together in beautiful Damascus. The thread of their personal happiness permeates her account of learning to live in the Middle East - in an alien culture, in which she did not even speak the language for some years. Everything was new to her, she had no idea how to cook the local foods, without American conveniences, and convenience stores. She was shocked to find there was no lock on the door of their room in the family home and that Syrians have no word for `private' so that various family members would happily burst into her room without notice. Her small children became her interpreters until she mastered Arabic. Meanwhile her husband - a brilliant economist - worked his way up to become a Minister of State, and they travelled the world together representing her adopted country. This is a happy story, and of especial interest is the minutiae of daily life in Syria, details which are normally invisible even to the relatively few people who visit this marvellous country. Yes, it is a love story, of Elaine and Mohammed Imady, but it is also an education in another culture, and the readers learns much about everyday life in Syria as the author learned, as she met and overcame each new problem on a daily basis. Written in an easy to read, free-flowing style I heartily recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Newcomer to Syria, 7 Jun 2009
By Ms. Anne M. Biffin (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Road to Damascus
This is a very personal account of a young American woman courageously taking up a different culture, country and religion in 1950's Syria for the sake of love. The writer carries the reader along in an easy style through the tremendous learning curve of a new language and customs, and soon becomes intrinsically involved in her loving and supportive new family and friends. We follow her through the minutia of daily living, births of her children, their leisure and occupational activities, political traumas and the loss of dear friends through warfare.
This is an ideal read for anyone interested in knowing firsthand the real Syria, its wonderfully hospitable people, the mosques and Christian crosses happily co-existing side by side and the sense that this is the cradle of civilisation.
