5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever need to know, 19 Feb 2007
By Kate (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I guess this book is something of a revamped classic. There's still traces of the "old school" left - such as the hilarious section that advises how to choose patterns "most becoming of your figure" but all in all, it contains pretty much everything you'll ever need to know in terms of techniques, with easy to follow pictures and instructions. The only thing I would say is that it's more aimed towards people using traditional patterns (Vogue, Simplicity etc) and doesn't have anything in the way of revamping old clothes or customising/personalising ready-made patterns, unlike some of the new generation sewing books that are coming out. But for general sewing techniques it's excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best sewing reference manual money can buy., 6 Jun 2007

There are many books written on the subject of sewing but few as comprehensive as this one. It takes you from the very basics such as choosing your equipment and fabric right the way through to tailoring and couture tecniques and doesn't miss a thing along the way. Whether you are new to the craft of dressmaking or have been sewing for quite a while this book comprehensively covers everything you need to know and explains it all in terms you will understand with helpfull illustrations just in case you don't. An absolute must for the avid sewer whether amateur or professional. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars the only sewing book you'll ever need, 27 Sep 2008
I am studying dressmaking by correspondence and I bought this book to assist me with the materials I receive from my college and I have to say it is the best investment I have made in a long time. The book is comprehensive, the pictures clear and the explanations are clear. I refer to this regularly in my studies and don't think I could live without it now!
