5.0 out of 5 stars Eclecticism at its best, 5 April 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
As the first of a proposed series of annual anthologies, this is a very interesting prospect. As far as I can tell, the stories were specially written for the volume by a number of familiar, if not famous, names in the world of fantastic and weird fiction, mysteries and modern pulp. Neal Asher is here, and Kim Newman, as well as writers better known as editors, like Mr Roberson and Michael Kurland. The stories themselves are very enjoyable, pulp tales that run along at a fair lick. There is no single genre that will cover the tales. There is a Roman Empire murder mystery, a superhero pastiche, a boy detective tale that mixes Enid Blyton with H P Lovecraft, a boxing tale that involves the mystic, a tale of Mike Resnick's Lucifer Jones - a missionary with dubious motivations discovering a fantastic isle and a tale of the far future, amongst others.

The commonality is that they are all adventure tales, so there is no heavy introspection, although the characterisation in many of the stories is great, and I cannot think of one tale in the collection that lets it down.

Add to that, a Michael Moorcock tale, and you can see that this is a collection to prize. Do yourself a favour and buy it.
