This is a beautifully produced book, with many excellent illustrations, and is good value for money at nearly 600 pages. What a pity then that the contents are complete nonsense.
Mr Potter has here combined two strands of crackpot literature in an unique fashion; on the one hand there is the alien abduction and alien artefact strand, and on the other hand there is the 'physics of flying saucers' strand.
The author takes the Andreasson abduction case, and supposedly scientific reports on UFO debris found in Russia, and upon these decidedly sand-like foundations builds a veritable castle of concrete scientific deduction.
It is, in fact, a master-class (excelling even 'Dr' Tom Bearden) in how to confuse the layman by backing up almost every step of unreasoning with what are largely bona fide scientific citations.
His modus operandi is typified by his treatment of the 'Searl effect'. There is no such effect, and yet its proponent, 'professor' Searl, has 'dined out' on it (literally and figuratively) for over 40 years, and has managed to suck in many supposedly rational people along the way. By all accounts, a Thai company has been inveigled into building perpetual motion machines which exploit the non-existent effect. Suffice it to say that favourable citation of the Searl effect sounds a death-knell for any hope of non-skeptical acceptance of a book. In particular because one is expected to believe that every previous working Searl generator has flown uncontrollably into outer space; thus conveniently explaining the persistent absence of a working model.
However, this is where Potter works his special 'baffling with science' magic. He takes each component of the Searl effect generator, and provides a scientific citation for some property of that component (Nylon, for example) which would make it, at least in his own little pseudoscientific world, behave in the required manner. It is an added bonus when some unexpected property of Nylon is found after the time when Searl says that he chose it, because Potter can then also credit Searl with scientific prescience.
The Searl example is picked out here simply because it is the most blatantly ridiculous. Other examples of the Potter technique might well fool engineers who have a weak grasp of physics (rather in the way that Podkletnov fooled NASA). Potter takes recent light-slowing demonstrations out of context and splices them onto his central 'gravitational manipulation' thesis. The fact that slowing light to walking-pace, within a specially treated gas, is irrelevant to the relativistic aspects of the speed of light in a vacuum is conveniently skated-over by the author.
The latter is clearly very proud of his sleight-of-mouth with regard to the misused scientific literature and even includes an over-verbose pre-emptive statement to the effect that skeptics must demolish every item of it before daring to question his conclusions.
Of course, skeptics can reverse this argument and say that the contents of this book will become valid as soon as the forthcoming Searl-Effect Generator produces energy from nowhere. Ufologists are invited, by this reviewer, to hold their breath while awaiting that moment.
