5.0 out of 5 stars for all who wanna make games, 1 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This book is good for a unique reason... It's interesting. whereas all other books on C++ teach you to program. This teaches you to make GAMES!!! This simple device makes you want to carry on learning and learning as you strive to make bigger and better games... Although none of the games are earth shattering it made me (a total beginner) even more motivated as I learnt how to customise them. All other books I bought were ok up to a point but took enormous will power to carry on reading as they were just SO BORING... but not this one. Imagine this book as learning with friends when you were young as opposed to from your lecturer. I can't recommend this book enough. Buy it or give it someone starting out as a present.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for beginners, but not too reliable, 10 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This was one of the first books I used when starting to program in C++, and was actually the main book I often turned to. It is quite informative, and covers a lot of ground quicker than other books, but there are some bad points too- 1) Don't be fooled by the title. This book will not help you make a proper game, it may inspire you to make one, but that is about as far as it goes. 2) There are many important aspects of C++ that are not explained fully, making certain chapters pointless. This book was a good learning tool, but I personally needed a lot more than this book offered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Programming can be fun!, 2 Dec 2006
By C. Green "book worm" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the easiest C++ book I have found and is actually fun to use.
The lessons are written out in a clear and logical way with good explaination.
The example programmes you type into your C++ compiler(not included) are easily adaptable .They remind me of text based programmes written years ago for the basic computers but using C++ and are an excellent grounding for later lessons.
The later lessons in the book integrate graphics in the form of a bitmap.
The last lesson of all building a pictorial pirate adventure.
The CD which came with my copy has the example programmes already listed for you to run with your compiler and the DirectX SDK .
I would recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble getting their heads around C++ .
This would be suitable for 10 years of age (and upwards)if the child had an interest in learning programming and a patient parent who could learn alongside to help .
