Some would say a little misleading..., 4 Jul 2002
I am well versed in VB6 and this book opened up a whole new world. The first HALF! of the book explains VB and the Windows32 API in great detail, and although it is very interesting / informative, actually has nothing to do with DirectX, although the Author does explain that you need to walk before learning to run. Then it goes in to DirectX7 and DirectDraw, again very informative, but i want to learn DirectX8 (which does not have DirectDraw anymore!), then a few chapters on DirectPlay8, DirectSound8, DirectInput8. Then finally, in chapter 14 DirectX8. and it flies through it so fast you will miss it if you blink. This is a shame as the book itself is superbly written in a friendly way with a lot of code snippets and examples. Dont get me wrong, i learnt a lot from this book, (although not a lot of it about DX8!) and if Mr. Harbour wrote another that SOLELY concentrated on DX8 and more info on AI and 3D programming, i would rush out and buy it, simply because i found his writing style easy to read and understand. So, 5 stars for layout, style, substance and information on all the other subjects learnt, but only 3 for DirectX8.
