Product Description

Review
"Game programming is without a doubt the most intellectually challenging field of computer science in the world. However, we would be fooling ourselves if we said that we are 'serious' people! Writing (and reading) a game programming book, should be an exciting adventure for both the author and the reader." Andre LaMothe, Series Editor

Product Description
This book is intended for beginning to intermediate programmers who may or may not have experience with the Visual Basic language, or advanced programmers who are interested in learning game programming. This book starts at the very beginning, explaining how to install and set up Visual Basic 6.0, and takes the reader through the development of a complete game before jumping into more advanced topics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some would say a little misleading..., 4 Jul 2002
I am well versed in VB6 and this book opened up a whole new world.
The first HALF! of the book explains VB and the Windows32 API in great detail, and although it is very interesting / informative, actually has nothing to do with DirectX, although the Author does explain that you need to walk before learning to run.

Then it goes in to DirectX7 and DirectDraw, again very informative, but i want to learn DirectX8 (which does not have DirectDraw anymore!), then a few chapters on DirectPlay8, DirectSound8, DirectInput8.
Then finally, in chapter 14 DirectX8. and it flies through it so fast you will miss it if you blink.

This is a shame as the book itself is superbly written in a friendly way with a lot of code snippets and examples.

Dont get me wrong, i learnt a lot from this book, (although not a lot of it about DX8!) and if Mr. Harbour wrote another that SOLELY concentrated on DX8 and more info on AI and 3D programming, i would rush out and buy it, simply because i found his writing style easy to read and understand.

So, 5 stars for layout, style, substance and information on all the other subjects learnt, but only 3 for DirectX8.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, 26 Sep 2003
I bought this book for a project in my diploma year in computing. I wanted to create a 2d sapce shooter like r-type and i achieved what i set out to do. It starts by teaching you the basics of 2d game programming which is essential no matter what language or sdk(dx,opengl). His code examples are very well explained and they all work unlike some books. But theres not much direct3d in the book and its mainly suited for programmers who want to learn about directdraw for 3d games, it also shows you how to use joysticks, import sound files, play music etc. Very good for 2d games

5.0 out of 5 stars More than worth a good read., 31 Dec 2003
This book was recommended to me by someone I know who is also looking into DirectX with Visual Basic and when my purchase finally arrived I can see why. It is well written and quite inspiring. As with all good books that teach you something it only gives you one side of the square and lets you imagination fill in the rest. A quality I think all designers should have. This book does not teach you how to be a technician but instead teaches you the theory, with working examples, which then allows you to move on swiftly and begin creating your own, very professional looking visual basic games. Being more to the graphics side of what ever project I've been involved with in the past, has left my programming abilities a little lacking. However, recently I have been put in a position where I've had to do everything and this book as been a very valuable asset.
