Product Description

Review

"Game programming is without a doubt the most intellectually challenging field of computer science in the world. However, we would be fooling ourselves if we said that we are 'serious' people! Writing (and reading) a game programming book, should be an exciting adventure for both the author and the reader." Andre LaMothe, Series Editor

Product Description

This book helps beginners get started and provides readers with enough information to create their own games.  It is a book that requires no previous experience with programming, but does assume a good understanding of computers.  It begins by teaching the basics of programming and covers basic program flow, statements, and creating a window to developing a complete game library using the latest DirectX version.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book to start games programming, 1 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Having a limited knowledge of games programming (and C++ in general) I found this book a useful guide although I did notice a few mistakes with the end of chapter questions/exercises. It passes though each topic quite quickly but in enough details to be able to grasp the concepts. It also takes you through designing 2 games and explains each step of the process/programming. It also covers more complex programming techniques like AI and mathematics / algorithms. The only drawback is it is aimed just at a Windows platform.

5.0 out of 5 stars As A University Student, 6 Jul 2002
Okay im studying a Games Programming degree in a NE University, wanting to expand my knowledge but aving only looking for a book that will raise my standards in the industry i was look for a book to teach me the fundamentals of it all.

Its definatly a great book for the beginner, ive found myself jumping the indroductions to C++ but if your planning to build up a cv of games this will help you do this while learning everything from AI to collision detection.

Even if it doesnt really cover 3d Games its one for the core fundamentals of game programming. Did i mention its really easy to follow , personal level teaching... the best way!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, bad layout, 6 Jul 2003
By W. Dalmijn - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read this book for the first 100 pages now, and this is what my conclusion is: the book is very clear and concise and it explains everything you need to understand to start making DX games, however what it reall lacks is a good layout, the book is very thick and wide cause of the layout it uses. IT would have been the best book around if the fonts where smaller, but also if the book was a little longer and less wide making the text a lot easier to put in to mash.

This however is a minor inconvenience LaMothe is problably the best game programmer teacher around, he knows his stuff and this is not the first book he has written about it so he has a lot of experience

Anyone who wants to start programming without any knowledge this is your cake!!!
