Perl is a multi-platform, open source language that works on Unix and Windows. This text, aimed at the young developer, teaches Perl in the context of Web development.

From the Author
This book is intended to get you started building Web applications with Perl as quickly as possible. The first part of the book will help familiarize you with the basics of the Perl language using brief examples to illustrate each point. From there, I’ll show you how forms can interact with Perl CGI programs and how to build CGI programs into Web-based, database-driven applications. At the end of the book is a (almost!) complete Web application.

Before I began writing, I thought about what I always look for in a book when I want to learn a new (Web) language. I remember once looking for a book on PHP; I did want to learn the language basics, but I also wanted to learn how to send mail, use files, use databases, and so on. Finding all this in one book that was also an introduction to the language proved impossible, and so I ended up buying several books.

In Perl Fast and Easy Web Development, I have attempted to incorporate many of the cool things you can do with a language, in addition to the basics of Perl, into one book. As some people may not be familiar with HTML or JavaScript, along the way I have included basic chapters on these subjects, so that you can add nice touches such as form validation to your applications. Nothing in this book is comprehensive—in 400+ pages that is not possible. But I hope that this book does go some way in living up to its title: Perl Fast and Easy Web Development.
