3.0 out of 5 stars Probably not what you're looking for, 11 Jun 2003
If you are looking to get into game programming and the only language you know is java, this book probably isn't what you're looking for. It goes through a lot of java, but there's only one example game in the book! It's not even a 2D 'playable game, it's an original puzzle game. The book concentrates on making applets look good rather than, filling them with any decent game content. I might seem to be being very down on the book, but it has taught me some useful stuff, unfortunately you'll be teaching yourself how to apply it to games.

4.0 out of 5 stars good and insightful if you can stand the c++ comments, 22 Aug 2002
i purchased this book soley to help me out with an assignment in Java and so for it has been very good with a section of the book explaining the basics of java and the applications for them, there are also sections on topics that we all believe are fundamental to game programming, however the one thing that really iratated is unseemingly large amounts of references to c++, this takes up a lot of my time due to the fact that i am programing in java, however if you can withstand the comments then this is a very good book

3.0 out of 5 stars Gets the point across!!, 13 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book will open your eyes to the possibilities of Java game programming. It encompasses many aspects including multiplayer games.

The game engine is useful but a little bit restrictive. However the range of code examples is impressive. A compiler is added in to the mix to get you started.

I docked some marks for the presentation of the book, however if you are a fan of the series, this wont disappoint!
