Product Description

Review
"Game programming is without a doubt the most intellectually challenging field of computer science in the world. However, we would be fooling ourselves if we said that we are 'serious' people! Writing (and reading) a game programming book, should be an exciting adventure for both the author and the reader." Andre LaMothe, Series Editor

Product Description
This book teaches readers everything they will need to know about seventeen awesome effects for game programming; including dynamically generated landscapes, fog, motion blur, and environment mapping. Detailed explanations of each trick, along with easily dissected sample code, allow readers to turn their games from everyday doldrums into bleeding edge eye candy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beginners only, 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
"almost" a total waste of time to anyone who knows even a bit of DirectX. "dynamically generated landscapes, fog, motion blur, and environmental mapping" No landscapes, except water, no fog, no "motion blur" - it does have an "IMAGE BLUR", and a page on switching on Environment mapping in DX. When it should be talking about dynamic light mapping, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows, it gives a page on setting blend modes to use light maps, and thats it. Half the book is getting into DirectX and printing a textured poly. The rest is very much beginner stuff, and only water is remotly interesting, which is why it gets more than 1 star. Its hardly got any "special effects" at all, normal stuff. It should be okay for beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe somewhere in time I will find better book.., 30 April 2002
Very, very strange book..
When I saw it I thought it would be a hardcore book about special effects and tricks which can help you to earn tons of money..
...This book is written like the author made his first steps in DirectX and prefers to teach others instead of developing something...
I can name this book "Beginning DirectX and Shader Programming.", NO GAME programming, NO SPECIAL EFFECTS programming.. Maybe a little.. It gives you basic structure of DirectX, little bit more texturing.. Author explains _some_ effects you can find in both DirectX and NVidia SDK's.. He develops something like particle systems engine - the only really useful thing in this book.

Hundred of pages is wasted due to explaining of Win32 GDI function...

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book Now!!!, 5 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book is absolutley brilliant. If your serious about game programming, buy this book. Whether you just starting out or semi-experienced, you should buy this book. It starts with an intro to DirectX and then 3D topics. Then it has a section on 2D effects like fire, water, clouds and much more. Finally moving on to 3D effects, like explosions, guns + projectiles, and an in-depth review of particle engines. This is an amazing book, probably the best I've read so far. BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT NOW NOW NOW!!!!!

Unexpectedly, a great intro to D3D.

As a relative newcomer to Direct3D, this book provided a very solid and understandable intro to the subject. Read more
