5.0 out of 5 stars a welcome new edition of the wonderful Armitage stories, 28 Dec 2008
By Dr. Sarah A. Brown "Sarah Brown" (Cambridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first read (most of) Joan Aiken's stories about the Armitage family when I was about ten. The Armitages are a very ordinary family but extraordinary adventures befall them - visits from the Eumenides, encounters with dragons and unicorns, and several brushes with rather grumpy witches. Aiken's tales thus follow in the tradition of E.Nesbit, Edward Eager, and Diana Wynne Jones - and Saki too perhaps. They are full of humour, irony and bathos, but also of wonder and poignancy. The title story of the collection, `The Serial Garden', is especially memorable, and the previously uncollected final Armitage tales were excellent too, particularly `Don't Go Fishing on Witches' Day'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Serial Garden, 26 Feb 2009
By S. Brookes "Nice Irma" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These are among the most unusual and memorable children's stories I've read. Very English in character - slightly old fashioned so I was thrilled when my two children read them (now 14 and 10) and agreed they were brilliant. The Serial Garden has gone down into family legend: anytime we see any antiquated packaging on a product we turn to the back to look for the magical garden competition... You have to have read it to know what I mean. Delightful, intelligent writing for children - a classic collection.
