Product Description

Review

A kimono looks an intricate garment with all its folds and extravagant sleeves but Vicki Square reveals that it is, in fact, just a series of rectangles sewn together. So, if you can knit a scarf, you can knit a kimono and there is a wider variety of styles than you might think. The book begins with a fascinating introduction to this classic Japanese garment, delving into its history, the range of shapes, the anatomy of the kimono and its significance. An inspirational chapter shows how you can easily design your own kimono, showing how to choose yarn and how the rectangular pieces fit together. There are 18 projects that illustrate the different looks a kimono can have; long or short, with sleeves or without, casual or opulent, deep or cuffed sleeves. This creates a choice of knit from a smart everyday cardigan to a signature piece such as the uchikake with the traditional stylised wave pattern and curved sleeves. The kimonos are worked in many interesting stitches that give the pieces texture and interest that is shown off to the full in the large rectangular panels. There are lattice stitches, crossover stitches, medallion motifs, fan stitches and herringbone stitches worked in a fabulous selection of yarn fibres that tie up very well with the kimono theme. --Knit Today, March 08

Product Description

From casual to formal, the kimono shape has endured for centuries as a staple form of dress for peasantry and nobility alike. The classic boxy shape is recognized worldwide as an icon of Japanese life and culture, and is used as a canvas for colour, pattern and design. For each kimono in this collection, Vicki Square has created a knitted interpretation of a style or feature of traditional kimono. The styles and shapes of the garments run the gamut from short to long, rectangular sleeves to shaped, straight or overlapping front opening, with sleeves or without, casual to dressy. The knitted fabric matches traditional kimono design as much as possible - yarns composed of natural fibers (silk, cotton, linen, bamboo and wool) and stitch patterns that drape and move much as their woven counterparts. Although the projects may look difficult, they are based on simple rectangular shapes that require very little shaping on the knitter's part. These are ideal first garment projects for knitters wanting to venture beyond scarves and are also ideal projects for experienced knitters wanting classic, wearable garments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kimono Designs - Beauty and Simplicity , 30 Aug 2007
By Lauragais "circle-h" (Carcassonne, France) - See all my reviews
This is a book of very high standard, print, color and paper quality are excellent and harmonious. The photographs of the 18 Kimono designs are artful, focussed, explicatory and descriptive, showing each model at least once in full size from the back and front, flat and on the body to see the fall of the panels, plus smaller detailed views of more intricate points such as the stitch pattern itself, or details on closures, collars, cuffs.

The book is well-structured in Introduction, Kimono Basics, Design Your Own Kimono, Glossary, Resources, Bibliography and Index. Advice on adapting the designs and patterns / yarns to your own liking is also provided and is easy to follow. The drawings of the patterns are clear and easy to understand and enlarge, sizes given in inch and cm.

Although all designs are based on simple shapes, some require more knitting expertise such as for Intarsia or Fair Isle motifs. For all designs good skills, i.e. uniformity and evenness when knitting stockinette patterns are a definite plus.

The simplicity of the Kimono design makes for an eye-catching stunning result that will not be subject to the rapid changes in fashion. The author is Vicki Square. Her books are always of high quality - but the "Knit Kimono" will set the singular standard for books on modular patterns. It is worth buying even just to enjoy reading it and looking at the pictures, a collector's item in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more than the designs!, 11 Jul 2008
By J. Heritage "janeheritage" (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The previous reviewers were right to rate this book highly. I am thrilled with it. As well as the beautiful, unusual designs, it contains loads of interesting information about kimono and other Japanese costume.

Although there are only 18 designs, they are so attractive, flexible and simple in construction (that being the nature of kimono) that a reasonably experienced knitter will find it quite straightforward to adapt them to their own preferences: for example I will change the dangling kimono sleeve on some to make them more useful for work. This means that the possibilities for knitting from this book are almost limitless.

A lot of the yarns will be tricky for UK knitters to obtain, but again the simple nature of the designs will make substitution more enjoyable than burdensome! I have a number of designs earmarked as stash busters already...

I can't wait to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish knit book, 20 Mar 2008
I bought this book on the strength of the previous (and only) review and am so glad I did. I am now halfway through a pattern from the book, it's clearly explained and has beautiful pictures of it from every angle.

This is a book that no keen knitter should be without.
