5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, 17 Oct 2002
A funny, poignant story about a young woman coming to terms with grief over the death of her father. When Dorothy Robinson's father dies in a freak accident at a local coffee house, Dorothy's world is turned upside down.

Her mother runs off to Canada to join a cult, headed by a woman who calls herself the Grand Master of the Galaxy. Dorothy is worried about her, but she gets no help from her twin brother, Jude, who is a lot more interested in his law firm and his girlfriend, Maggie than chasing off to Canada to find his mother.

It's up to Dorothy to try and rescue her, accompanied by her recently acquired boyfriend, Lahrs and renowned cult expert, Mervyn O'Roy (who Dorothy is convinced is a leprechaun.) Once they reach Canada, there is a surprise in store for them all...

This is a great book, humorous and moving too, sometimes both at once. With a cast of wonderful characters and a few stories going on in the sidelines, it certainly doesn't bore. There are various references to the Wizard of Oz throughout the book, but even if you know nothing about that other Dorothy, you'll enjoy this book. It's a great read. (I started to read it when I had an hour to spare and thought, oh, I'll get a little bit read now, and I had to read until I'd finished it.) Highly recommended.
