Product Description

Product Description

The tactics and techniques of two of the greatest competitors in the history of mixed martial arts combat, Renzo and Royler Gracie, are captured in this book. Their 'grappling' style of martial arts is explained -- methods that focus on holds and throws rather than kicks and punches, and come closer to the spirit and nature of real fighting than other martial arts. Covered are the history, rules, philosophy, strategy, and positions of submission grappling, providing a complete account of this increasingly popular sport.

Since the release of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique, which I created with my cousin Renzo, one of the most common questions I have been asked is, "Why did you decide on those techniques and why did you present them in that order?" Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A specialist book, 21 April 2004
By G. Yam "gary3911" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Let's not dwell on the credibility or not of the author and just acceptthat Royler is an absolute authority on BJJ and knows exactly what he'stalking about.
This book, like all recent BJJ books in this series is beautifullyproduced with excellent, sensible photography. The descriptions arefirst-rate, and the theoretical sections well constructed.
Problems? Don't buy this book if you don't know what you're getting. Thisis a no-gi manual for no-gi / MMA contest. If you are a gi / sportfighter, this is not for you. This is also not really a self-defencemanual.
Also, if you are a beginner, or know nothing about BJJ, this is not foryou. All martial arts manuals need to be used in conjuction with properteaching and sparring partners.
If you have some experience in BJJ, and are into no-gi - this is 100% foryou, no questions asked. This book has a lot of value for you - maybe evenmore if read in conjunction with Renzo's book "Mastering Jujitsu" whichcovers philosophies of no-gi fighting.

4.0 out of 5 stars BJJ book is ok but not great, 15 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This book is well presented with great photos and nice commentery but i think for a submission based book it lacks structure and direction.

Royler demonstrates mainly moves from the top position (so don't complain if you were looking for guard book), a variety of guard passes, foot locks, escapes and submissions from a few positions.

Maybe its the intuitive nature of grappling that made this book seem rather dry, however i think its down to the structure of the book. Its a little bit of everything, if you are looking to work an aspect of your game i don't think this book is the one for you. The lack of direction seems to afflict it.

Unlike other videos and books this book reflects roylers teaching style (1 pass, 1 escape , one sub)as he explains but i dont think this format works well for books. It jsut seemed that this book didnt teach me much, with books much like teaching i think it should be well formatted and progressive. This book seems to display a little bit of everything.

A good read and it will help you but if you have been doing BJJ for a few years i wouldnt get it (get something that concentrates on one area and teaches it in detail). I guess if you are someone intermediate and have been doing it for a few months then this book is pretty decent as it'll open you up to many new possibilities.
