Product Description

Product Description

The faces and stories of the sprawling Gracie family, who transformed Brazilian jiu-jitsu from an unknown street technique into the dominant form of martial arts today, are captured here. Introduced are Grandmaster Helio Gracie, who as a frail boy in Brazil in the 1930s developed the art, creating leverage techniques that allowed him to overcome other martial artists, regardless of size or strength; Rickson Gracie, the mystical family champion who has never been defeated in combat; and Royce Gracie, the most famous active martial artist in the United States, who put Brazilian jiu-jitsu on the map by winning the first three Ultimate Fighting Championships before the largest pay-per-view audiences in history. In addition to stunning action shots of the Gracies in all the legendary matches and their unique perspectives on what really went on during those fights, this book includes archival photos of the family, from their beginnings in Brazil in the 1930 to the present day and the new generation of champions. Fans will learn of Renzo's transformation from Rio street brawler to New York celebrity and revered teacher; of Royce and Royler's exploits as mischievous kids; and of Rickson's battle against one of Rio's toughest drug gangs.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enthusiastic and interesting family biography, 31 May 2003
By G. Yam "gary3911" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lets get this out of the way - this is a good book, written by a real enthusiast. Kid Peligro really shows his love of BJJ and the Gracie family. Ten accounts of the most interesting Gracies are littered with photos and documents that could only have come from the most direct sources, this is tremendously interesting for any practicioner of BJJ.

Now the problems. First off, as can only be expected, the writing is very one sided - but who said this is a bad thing? Every account makes the Gracies out to be superheroes beyond reproach, and losses in the fighting arena are very much down played.

Second, the editing is very sketchy in places. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors abound. There is also some argument to be made about some of the origins of BJJ, especially with regard to judo, but this is of only passing interest to the non-martial artist.

If you are a BJJ practicioner, this is a tremendously important book - if you are a martial artist it is extremely interesting. If you are neither, you may well be fazed and confused.

I closed the book feeling a great deal of respect for the family and author. It's not perfect, but nothing is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gracie Way: An Illustrated History of the Gracie Family, 23 Jun 2003
By ANDY CRITTENDEN (Doncaster, South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Gracie Way is the most interesting and informative book ive ever read.

The way each family member is profile is fantastic. From their early training right through to their teaching at their own Academies.

For me the best bit was reading about the fights they had, on the mats, in the academy, in the ring, on the beach, in a cage or where ever the Gracie Challenge took them.

I recommend this book to any one

Great job by the author Kid Peligro. Very well researched with fantastic attention to detail

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, 7 Jan 2005
By D. Mckelvie (UK) - See all my reviews

This book is an incredible and personal look into the individual lives of the most prominant members of the Gracie family. The accounts are respectfully written and foster a great admiration for the discipline, dedication and courage that each of the men featured in the book has displayed.

Although the accounts are in a way biographical I think each of the characters featured in the book could fill a volume twice the thickness of this book. So it is in no way a comprehensive biography of any of them. Rather it focusses on the inspiring stories of their struggles, dedication and triumphs.

If you want to read entralling accounts of their matches (official and otherwise), streetfights and other shinanigans then you can't go wrong with this. If you love jiu jitsu you will read this again and again.
