5.0 out of 5 stars The New Wave of Realistic Self-Defence, 5 Jan 2003
Using techniques and strategies PROVEN effective in modern No Holds Barred martial arts fighting competitions, the authors have created a brutally simple, yet effective self-defence system. Easy to follow instructions, coupled with clear photographs make this an effective reference aid for martial artists or self-defence students of all shapes, sizes and styles.

As a professional martial arts instructor, I recommend this book very highly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for BJJ practitioners., 8 April 2006
By A Customer
I have been involved in martial arts for most of my life (TKD, Aikido, Budo Taijutsu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu & Muay Thai). So here is my honest review of this book:

- This book is mainly useful for BJJ practitioners to have, because it shows various ways of using their skill in different scenarios.. e.g. how to clinch with an opponent using a blunt weapon (which is the best and most simple/realistic thing to do against blunt weapon attacks). No point to take an opponent to the ground if you don't already have the skill there.

- It should be noted that the gun disarms are very similar to what Krav Maga teaches. There is nothing new under the sun anyway... no matter what some of the Krav Maga/Reality fighting/Silat people here (who have 'reviewed' this book) will try to sell you.

- There were two things I did'nt like about this book. The first was the poor organisation of techniques. The second is the knife disarming techniques.

- To be fair the only two knife defense systems I have seen are 'STAB' and 'Red Zone', which are modern full-resistance training methods recently designed by SBG individuals. Almost any other system is laughable (and yes, that includes Silat). I have also heard that Hanagah has some good knife techs, but I have not been exposed to that yet.

- So to summarise, if you are a BJJ practitioner this book will be interesting. Just disregard the knife disarms, and pick up the 'Red Zone' DVD instead. If you don't do BJJ don't bother with this.
