Product Description

Product Description

Story collaborations between cult figure Howard Waldrop and numerous other celebrated science fiction and fantasy writers are collected for the first time in this unique volume. 'One Horse Town' breathes fresh life into an ancient tale, combining elements from the sack of Troy, Homer's early days, the last day in the life of a Trojan warrior, and the archaeological dig at Troy. In 'Custer's Last Jump!' the legendary Crazy Horse uses Confederate monoplanes in his famous battle against General Custer. 'A Voice and Bitter Weeping' paints a grim post-nuclear age where Israeli mercenaries fight Texans in a never-ending, hopeless war. Mystery, intrigue, and treachery abound in the Heian Japan setting of 'The Latter Days of the Law', where a clever man must find a lost prince.

3.0 out of 5 stars After all these years.., 30 Aug 2005
By A Customer
..we finally have access to H'ards's collaborations and it was worth the wait(mostly).
Eight stories, three mini-essays and an introduction and preface for each of the stories. As usual the introductions are almost worth the admission price alone.
The stories...One Horse Town (w/Leigh Kennedy) is the first and in my opinion, the best. Three different timelines merging together in spectacular fashion.
...Custers Last Jump (w/Steven Utley) A classic Alternative-History tale with sky-diving Apache braves and dog-fights over the plains !
...The Latter Days of the Law (w/Bruce Sterling) This subtle story of Samurai's and court etiquette has more versimilitude than you can shake a stick at.
The remainder of the stories are varied in quality but this collection should and probably will be on the shelves of any Waldrop fan of note.
