5.0 out of 5 stars Best in Class?, 22 Mar 2003
An excellent book. Well-structured and well-presented (the latter must be something to do with the technical author who isn't listed as an author above). Covers the full set of topics to the right depth. I had used Marty Hall's and Budi Kurniawan's books to self-teach (along with designing & coding practice apps) but, directly I started reading this book, the whole picture started falling into place. Their end of chapter questions and the trial exams are very close in style, difficulty level and content to the actual exam. By contrast, when I did the Java Prog certification using books by two other publishers, the books were pretty good but not 'spot-on' like this one is and their trial exams were not so close to the style of the actual.
If I were going to do another certification and these guys had written an 'exam study kit' for it, I wouldn't bother looking at anyone else's.
How anyone can buy it, take the test two days later and actually have gotten value from it, I don't understand. Took me two weeks to feel ready.
An excellent book - oops, I said that already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it and Pass!, 7 Jan 2003
By A Customer
This book was the only book i bought for the exam. After two weeks of studying i used the exam-prep application on the CD. The questions in this application are of the same order as at the exam, so a perfect reference you to know if you are ready for the exam. I went and passed! And even after the exam the book is 'Value for Money'.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent study guide, 10 Sep 2002
By Graeme Brown (Scotland) - See all my reviews
A well-written book that does exactly what it says on the cover, providing the information required to pass the Sun Certified Web Component Developer exam.

The authors assume a reasonable knowledge of Java, so it is not for beginners. The style is concise, concentrating on the exam objectives and not giving a wider discussion of how to write web applications in the real world, the authors admit this in the preface and suggest other titles for further reading. An obvious first choice would be “Core Servlets & Java Server Pages” by Marty Hall

The structure of the book follows closely the objectives defined by Sun for the exam, so it is easy to check-off topics and assess your progress. Each topic is covered in what appears to be the correct level of detail for the exam, including some of the nitty-gritty syntax that some other books miss.

If you like to cram for an exam then this is probably for you.
