Product Description

Synopsis
Using the wisdom of Judaism to heal the planet. From God's first injunction, "Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for food." (Gen. 1:29) The Hebrew Bible offers countless examples of how God intends a compassionate and caring attitude toward animals, our health, and the health of the planet. This attitude, as Richard Schwartz shows in his pioneering work now fully revised, has been a constant theme throughout Judaism to the present day. Indeed, Judaism's particular concern for tikkun olam, a healing of the world, has never been more urgent today - given the current state of world hunger, environmental degradation, and the horror of factory farms. Dr. Schwartz shows not only how Judaism is particularly well suited to solving these problems, but how doing so can revitalize one's Jewish faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would Jesus eat meat today? To find the answer buy the book., 27 Aug 2001
By D.Gwillim, Veg4Lent www.veg4lent.org (Liphook, Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
There are at least six compelling reasons why Christians should urgently consider a vegetarian diet: 1) To demonstrate our love for God. 2) To help the poor and starving. 3) To stop the destruction of the environment. 4) To stop the cruelty and violence of the Factory Farm. 5) To prevent further damage to our body, the temple of the Holy Spirit and 6) To prevent war. We ought to prayerfully consider these points and ask ourselves 'What would Jesus do'. When Jesus entered this world there were no factory farms and the care of animals was strictly governed by the law (Torah). So the question we should be asking is not "Was Jesus a Vegetarian" but "Would Jesus eat meat - today?" Would he condone; our indifferent attitude toward the care of God's creation: the cruelty and violence of the meat industry; the unjust distribution of food in favour of rich countries; the possibility of leaving a polluted and unproductive planet to future generations; disregard for your own health through the over consumption of animal fat; the increased possibility of war, as reduced resources increase our inability to feed an over populated world. Richard Schwartz covers in depth all of these issues, he uses his considerable knowledge of the Torah to show that the law incorporated compassion for animals and the way they should be treated; his statistics are well researched and documented; he gives advice to those wishing to adopt and defend a vegetarian diet; his conclusions apply to all caring, compassionate people, whether they be Jew, Christian, Moslem, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist. Jesus was a Jew who came to strengthen the law (Torah), not disregard it "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." (Matthew 5:17,18). To Jesus, the Law (Torah) was God's unalterable word. Jesus also insisted on a strict observance of the law "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven" (Mat. 5:19,20). So to answer the question "What would Jesus eat - today?" we need a greater knowledge of the law (Torah), and a Jewish perspective can be a valuable insight into the way Jesus would approach the question of vegetarianism in today's world. Richard Schwartz writes "Although most Jews eat meat today, the high ideal of God, the initial vegetarian dietary law, stands supreme in the Torah for the Jews and the whole world to see - an ultimate goal toward which all people should strive". I was spiritually blessed by what I read, I was beginning to wonder why a God of love would create animals to suffer and die, just to satisfy man's lust for meat. Richard Schwartz has confirmed my belief in a holy, loving and just God. Please seek God's will with an open mind and discover the truth for yourself, not only about vegetarianism but our responsibility towards all of God's creation. Where do you start? Buy the book "Judaism and Vegetarianism". Don Gwillim Chairman - Christian Response (Worldwide) Caring for all of God's creation.
