Product Description
Synopsis
Nature, the most popular source of inspiration for oil painters, has the amazing ability to evoke feelings of tranquility and peace. Colley Whisson shows readers how to idealize and romanticise nature's everyday subjects using a loose, impressionist oil painting approach. He provides dynamic instructions for transforming simple images into works of art, filled with mood and color. They'll also learn how to paint impressionistic figures - the magic ingredient in romantic landscapes - and weave them into their paintings. Seven gorgeous sample galleries and step-by-step demonstrations make it easy and fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Colour me Azure!, 17 Jan 2004
By Elodie "rusty woodward" (Swansea Valley, Wales) - See all my reviews
This delightful book is definitely one for your artist's reference collection, if only to enjoy the wonderfully executed examples of Colley Whisson's work. Guaranteed to both inspire and motivate artists at all levels of experience.

I found the book well organised with concise explanations on how to achieve the effects obtained by the Impressionists. It begins with the usual advice on types of materials and suggested palette. The focus is on drawing, tonal values and the use of brushstokes and palette knife to give texture and life to your painting. There are step-by-step demonstrations and diagrams which describe how to bring into play composition, atmosphere, use of shadow and light, perspective and how to harmonize colour and tones. The desciption of working with foreground, middleground and background reminded me of how important this structure is to the development of one's picture. The demonstrations also contain a picture of the palette, mediums and brushes the artist used for each example. It really is worth taking a look at this book. Check it out!

A really stimulating book.
