Product Description

From the Author
I've done it!
Now on my fourth programming book, I write all my books with the belief that I can teach just about everyone to program a computer, but I must admit I had some worries when my publisher asked me to write a book about Objects in Visual Basic.

Why is that?

No other single topic in Visual Basic seems to be give students more problems than Objects---I should know, I've been teaching Objects for years.

On the other hand, no single topic may be more important than Objects---which forms the basis for an understanding of ActiveX and COM.

Invariably my students manage to 'get it' so I must be doing something right!

Armed with the knowledge that if I can teach Visual Basic Objects face to face, I can impart that knowledge in a book, I determined to write a book that followed the pattern of my other three books---a classroom scenario in which you follow a typical programming class trying to learn Visual Basic Objects.

The pace is measured, no important concept is left unexplained or glossed over, and the development of a unifying pseudo real-world project during the course of the book will solidify its concepts to the point that not only will you understand Objects by its conclusion, you'll be looking for reasons to use them in your next program.

The reviewers of my book have told me they've never seen another Objects book like this---some of these reviewers are seasoned Visual Basic programmers, and they report that they now understand Visual Basic Objects in a way they never thought possible. Concepts that were cloudy in their mind are now crystal clear.

I hope you feel the same way after reading this book. Here's what is covered in the book.

Visual Basic System Objects

Visual Basic Collections

Visual Basic Classes

ActiveX (COM) Automation

Creating your own Visual Basic Objects

Creating your own Visual Basic Collections

Creating your own Visual Basic Collection Objects

Creating your own ActiveX (COM) Components

As was the case with my highly successful first book, I think you'll marvel at the way all of your own questions are asked by members of the 'class' as you progress through the book.

By the time you complete this book, you'll have the confidence to create your own Objects and to confidently work with COM Objects---I guarantee it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for absolute beginners, 4 Dec 2001
By S. Moynihan (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you want to learn how to program with VB then this is a very good place to start. Admittedly, it is not going to turn you into an instant expert but it will take you to a level where you understand the fundamentals and you have the knowledge and confidence to build on this under your own steam.

Too many beginners books try to cover the subject completely. But this broad approach leaves the beginner drowning under a multitude of diverse ideas and concepts. This is the right approach for a reference book which can be consulted to resolve any issues that might arise but it is not helpful for a beginners book which needs to impart the key fundamentals quickly before the reader becomes disheartened by lack of progress.

The approach of this series of books, is to cover a smaller core part of the subject in depth in a learning environment that we are all familiar with and which works. Although it has a lot of pages it does not take long to read, a lot of this is screenshots and lines of code.

This enables the beginner to quickly gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts that gives them the knowledge and confidence to explore further. I have many years experience working with networking products and technologies and can testify from experience that once you achieve a certain level of understanding it is relatively easy to build on that.

In short, this is an excellent series of books if you are an absolute beginner to programming and need to take those vital first few steps. If you have previous programming experience then this probably isn't the book for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily followed introduction to Objects., 16 Sep 2000
By mwra (Portsmouth, UK) - See all my reviews
Coming late to programming, and learning in my spare time, the learning curve of many 'Learn To' type books can be step. This is the third of John Smiley's VB books I've now completed and despite the increasing complexity of the topics, the last has proved an easy intro into VB Objects.

I'll give fair warning that the classroom storyline used in the book is not for everyone - indeed this European reader found it grated somewhat. However, it does allow the author to cover obvious newbie errors and misunderstandings in an easily readable fashion.

If you already have some programming experience you might want to head straight to the Wrox series which are more factual. If like me, you don't "get" it all on the first pass, the John Smiley's books are a good starter's resource.

The main part of the book covers Objects. It then looks at using objects for automation of MS Office applications and shows how to create ActiveX objects (DLLs & EXEs).

You'll work through learning exercises on each subject and then on a project which continues through from the first book in the series. Don't worry if you are starting out with this book as full sample code is supplied on the accompanying CD. The author's site carries errata (few) and hosts discussion groups to help with working through the 'course'.

Happy to recomend this to others, especially those starting out with VB.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best...., 4 Oct 2003
By Mrs Ford (Sheffield, S Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
...computer book that I have ever read. I bought a second-hand copy of John's Learn to Program Objects book and was extremely impressed. I have tried to learn Visual Basic in the past and bought several books aimed at the 'beginner' - instead of being enlightened at the end, I have just been totally confused !!!.

I was so pleased with the easy style of his books, that I bought the LTP with VB6 and studied all the basics again. I can honestly say that its the first time that I have felt that I completely understand the subjects covered. I am in the market for copies of LTP Databases with VB6 and the LTP with VB6 Examples next.

I would certainly recommend them for any beginner who has a good knowledge of computers but who is wanting to branch out into programming. I can imagine that anyone who considered themselves 'intermediate to advanced' would find the text too 'easy'.

Due to having grasped the mandatory foundation skills - I now find that I can look at other more advanced texts and understand them.

Well done John, keep up the good work (please !!!!!)
