Do big math on small machines Write fast and accurate library functions Master analytical and numerical calculus Perform numerical integration to any order Implement z-transform formulas Need to learn the ins and outs of the fundamental math functions in

Master analytical and numerical calculus with this solid course in applied math from the renowned columnist of Embedded Systems Programming magazine. You will learn how to do big math on small machines with fast and accurate library functions, numerical integration to any order and z-transform formulas. Features never-before-published methods and a versatile set of algorithms to use in your own projects.

About the Author
Jack Crenshaw holds a Ph.D. in physics from Auburn University (specialties in math, electronics, and advanced dynamics). He wrote his first computer program in 1956 and his first microcomputer software a real-time, floating-point, Kalman filter-driven controller in 1976. He has been working with real-time software for embedded systems ever since, and thinks he might be beginning to get the hang of it. He is currently a senior principal design engineer for Alliant TechSystems, Inc., a contributing editor for Embedded Systems Programming magazine, and author of the popular 'Programmer's Toolbox' column. In his spare time, he likes to dabble in compiler theory, guidance and control theory, and help rehabilitate orphaned and injured wildlife.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wolf in sheep's clothing..., 23 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This book is presented in a friendly paperback cover, set in big type and the diagrams are a bit crude. You know the type of book, an "expert" pads two pages of real information with 400 pages of the blindingly obvious and blithely relieves you of 30 quid...BUT DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE FOLKSY STYLE, THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF BOOK AT ALL!
Mr. Crenshaw has written a serious piece of work here, both demonstrating and elucidating deep insight into the problems and (glorious) solutions of programming real-time mathematics in the digital world.
There is theory here, technique, first steps, refinement, deep consideration and then implementation and performance analysis.
The first part of the book deals mainly with "static" problems i.e. computing approximations to well-known functions...and if you thought using a series is the last word in fast computation of trig and logs etc.,. then you might just get an education here...I did!
The second part of the book deals with "dynamic" problems i.e. differentiation, integration and trajectory computation...and the tying together of differential calculus and digital signal processing is stunning.
If like me you are a practising embedded software engineer (working mainly in engineering and communication applications) this book is it's own reward, but even if you just want to read an explanation of some difficult concepts that actually makes sense to us less-than-Einsteins it cannot disappoint you.
So why only four stars ? Because when I first saw it I judged the book by it's cover...and it is so much more than that - it deserves a proper presentation...but the content stands alone.
