Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There are nearly 750 million people with disabilities world-wide, and the Internet provides a realm in which most of them should be able to participate to the benefit of all. Systems developed for the use of the average citizen in the everyday world often abridge the rights of the disabled, excluding them by making access difficult, cumbersome, unrewarding or even impossible. But more and more design experts recognise that in the wired world there is an opportunity to correct this injustice, though careful and thoughtful planning is necessary.

Web Accessibility for People With Disabilities provokes ideas on how a Web site for which you have responsibility can and should be made accessible to the whole community rather than unfairly restrictive. This book introduces to all the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), launched to raise the awareness of accessibility issues on the Internet and to encourage corrections. Positively, laws and standards for accessibility are being formulated and invoked.

Tips, tools, specifications and language (scripting) enhancements to make your Web site accessible abound in this practical book, and the author supplies details of sites from all over the world that can give advice, evaluation, or sometimes just service as a good example. --Wilf Hey

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for everybody involved in web site development., 16 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Mike Paciello has produced a first class resource for novice and expert web site developers alike. The Disability Discrimination Act in the UK now requires services to be accessible to all people. Hence there is now not only a moral obligation to make the World Wide Web accessible to the disabled, but a legal requirement too. Mike Paciello's book skilfully guides the reader through a vast array of information and practical tips that covers all aspects of developing an accessible web site. The text is generously supplemented with links to all the key web sites that support and promote the accessibility message. The opportunity of building a web site according to the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines serves the purpose of not only making your web site accessible to disabled people, but enhances the usability for everybody. With Paciello's book hot off the press why not put the web accessibility design principles into practice on your next web site project? You too can help in making the web accessible to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for anyone connected with the Web, 13 Jul 2001
By A Customer
What Mike Paciello has done is tell those who work in the world of the Web what they need to do in order to make information accessible to all. A fantastic reference book that should be in every Web developer's hand whenever they build a site. This is one of the most helpful guides I have ever read and I urge everyone to purchase and read this book. A must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars AccessAbility - Disability - The Law and How to.... Superb, 16 May 2003
This book has everything I needed and far more.
The first couple of chapters were to be honest a little boring for me, hit chapter 3 and you are well into the things to do, how to do them and what is expected of you as a developer.

As a developer of many years I understand accessability issues but had not realised the vast extent to which HTML can be customised to work better for people accessability needs.

The author makes you understand what to do and why with sample code and references that work and are clear.

Great book for students, web professionals or even home users that wish to improve their sites.

Well worth it!
