Product Description

Product Description
Microsoft's COM (Component Object Model) is both the key to Microsoft's Internet strategy and the technology for interaction among Microsoft's applications, such as editing a spreadsheet from within a word processor. This work shows how to use COM to create software objects and build applications quickly. It provides an overview of COM technology using real-world examples spanning the entire range of COM techniques such as: using COM API; using Microsoft Foundation Classes for C COM; using ATL (the Actve Template Library) for COM, RPC (Remote Procedure Calls); and COM+ (the C++ wrapper library for COM methods). The companion CD-ROM includes source code for all of the examples and a "SampleWizard" utility which enables the user to insert interactively the examples into applications.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book has a place but not for beginners, 8 April 2002
Plenty of examples such as "You want to make a COM server using ATL or MFC or SDK but little guidance on why you would choose which one. I purchased this book to learn COM from scratch and to be honest it did not help. Having learnt COM I re-read it and yes it has its place but I suggest that there are far better books such as those by Dale Rogerson and Don Box with which to learn COM.
The idea of COM by example is great but the examples need to be far better explained than they are in this. If you want to learn COM spend your money elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars This great book makes COM accessable, 14 Feb 2001
This book by John E. Swanke has answered my need for a comprehensable and quick entry to the mysteries of COM. He introduces the terminology and theory of com in a concise and above all readable fashion with plenty of code examples, and excellent line drawings. I will be looking for more titles by this author.
