Product Description

Product Description

Maggie's Harvest brings together over 350 of Maggie Beer's signature recipes, detailed descriptions of her favourite ingredients and inspiring accounts of memorable meals with family and friends. Maggie lives her life according to the seasons of her beloved Barossa Valley and this is evident on every page, where her overwhelming love of and enthusiasm for the Barossa, its produce and people shines though. The recipes highlight Maggie's philosophy of using the freshest and best seasonal produce available and treating it simply. Divided into four chapters based on the seasons, this book provides information on the local seasonal ingredients which Maggie is most passionate about, which she either grows on her farm and orchard in the Barossa, or sources from local suppliers.

About the Author

Maggie Beer operated the Barossa Valley's famous Pheasant Farm Restaurant with her husband Colin, for fifteen years. Since closing the restaurant in 1993, she has established an export kitchen to develop and make products for domestic and international markets, and now devotes much of her time to researching and developing her range. Maggie is the author of four successful cookbooks, Maggie's Farm, Maggie's Orchard, Cooking with Verjuice and Maggie's Table, and co-author of the bestselling Stephanie Alexander & Maggie Beer's Tuscan Cookbook. She is also a longstanding contributor of food columns to newspapers and magazines, and is co-host of The Cook and The Chef on ABC TV. Her website is www.maggiebeer.com.au

4.0 out of 5 stars An Australian Gem, 2 Mar 2009
By C. Atkinson "Carl" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews

This beautifully produced book provides a wealth of ideas and inspiration for producing really healthy, tasty dishes providing a welcome alternative to the usual Mediterranean flavours. I've tried about 5 recipes so far and all have worked well. Finding the Verjuice which is central to many of the recipes is difficult though its worth hunting it out - Harvey Nicols in London stocks Maggie Bells' own brand!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful treasury..., 16 April 2009
By M. Halsall "MH" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Though not recently published this book delivers a powerful punch in favour of the local and long nurtured - key tenants of the Slow Movement for example. Beer's cooking is rooted in the land and her family's relationship to it over the years since they moved to the Barossa, from shop to restaurant to farm to shop and most importantly to land.

The auto-biographical writing is direct and honest, the appreciation of ingredients is Austro-centric (as it should be!) and the recipes wonderful. It almost makes me sad to be in England! Once you get your head around the differing seasons and suppliers mentioned - you'll fond you want to cook everything, right now.

The best kind of book - on a par with Judy Rodgers Zuni Café Cookbook

4.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book, 9 Dec 2008
By Dr. Rich Boden "rich boden" (Coventry, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Though I'm an avid cook, I don't own many recipe books - and I decided to rectify this recently - Maggie's Harvest was my first purchase. The book caught my eye on the shelf in the bookshop because it's (a) huge and (b) beautiful. There are over 700 pages of recipes, photographs and anecdotes drawn from Beer's vast experience and knowledge. The book is really very beautiful, with lovely photos all the way through. It's nicely arranged by season, however, Beer is Australian, so what's in season for her in the Winter may not be the same as what's in season where you live (this is why I don't give it 5 stars). As sourcebooks go, this is above and beyond my previous "bible" (i.e. "Delia's Complete...") and I think it's worth every penny.
