Product Description

Product Description

From accidental beginnings, Mike Hulme's interest in genealogy grew first into a hobby and then into a catalyst for re-inventing himself as he passed through the dangerous years of mid-life. The pursuit of his family origins engaged his intellect, imagination and emotions in new ways and altered the way he saw himself, others and his country's history. Imagined Memories is a memoir of this encounter with the past, an account of his discovery of the ways open to all of us for connecting with what has been. It will appeal to all those who have some first-hand experience of doing family history and to those who can't understand why anyone would want to spend thousands of hours finding out about dead people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and funny, 17 Feb 2008
I enjoyed Imagined Memories cover to cover. It is brilliant. Mike Hulme's sense of humour recounting his quest for dead people is superb. Effortless to read and well put together. Thanks Mike.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ups & Downs of Discovering Your Family History, 28 Oct 2008
Not a book about "How to do Genealogy" nor simply a story about one person's past family history, this is a book about the joys and frustrations of finding your roots. The ups when you make find a connection that reveals more about an ancestor, the downs when the person simply cannot be traced. (Mike Hulme's elusive individual is Susan West.)

Anyone who has tried to find out about their own past will be able to identify with the emotions Mike describes .... and, almost as asides, there are ways used by Mike when looking into his own family's past that other amateur genealogists may want to pursue.

Enjoy!

What an excellent book. Superbly written. Sad, witty, educational, informative and oh so easy to read. Once I picked it up I could not put it down. Proving once and for all Genealogy is not for Anoraks.
