Product Description

Synopsis
"Cycling in the Peak District - Off-Road Trails and Quiet Lanes" is a guidebook for the leisure cyclist, mountain biker and family rider. It is for the cyclist who values fun, good views and lunch stops over grimaces, a racing heartbeat and aching legs. It is a book of enjoyable cycle rides. Eighteen routes, between 9 and 23km in length, explore the traffic-free lanes and off-road trails of the Peak District. Taking in quiet roads, dedicated cycleways and some of the more amenable off-road riding in the area, the routes explore every corner of the Peak; limestone dales, open moors, gritstone crags and tiny villages - they're all there. Never too long, too difficult or too remote, they are great fun and are challenging for riders of all ages and abilities. The guide also includes suggestions on where to ride with children and a section on where to ride along dedicated cycleways away from the traffic. Written by local riders, the rides are clearly described using step-by-step instructions and feature original maps, route profiles and local information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, you can judge a book by its cover!, 15 May 2007
Being a big fan of Vertebrate Publishing's fine mountain biking and indeed climbing guides I was a little apprehensive that their obvious `hardcore' outdoor activity credentials would translate to what is a leisure cycle guide, however first impressions of Cycling in the Peak District has further highlighted this publisher's position as one of the freshest produces of guidebooks operating in the country.

The book's subtitle aptly describes its remit. There are a number of excellent described cycle rides, covering all corners and all types of terrain in the Peak District. Of the rides I have done I have found the directions excellent and the introduction a fair and accurate reflection of the style of riding, whether it be a family ramble or a more adventurous off road explore.

The appendixes are perhaps my personal favourite part of the book, giving detailed info on way-marked trails in this national park as well as family orientated cycle venues.

The book is excellently designed and the content worth 10 out of 10. If you like cycling, at whatever pace this book will inspire you to peddle the Peak!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the tin...., 24 April 2008

Having already bought and used the Dark and White Peak Mountain Biking guides my the same publishers, I was after something a little more laid back that I could use for rides with my girlfriend.

I hadn't actually heard of this title until I stumbled across it and it fits the bill perfectly. It has a fine selection of short, but interesting rides around the Peak, that although they won't stress a frequent mountain biker, seem to be just about right for those that go out and enjoy a ride less frequently.

The book is as well laid out as their other guides, with clear maps and plenty of information. Often with notes about where you are riding and most importantly, a list of Peak cafes in the back!!

A thumbs up and well done chaps from us.
