Product Description

Product Description

Antiquarian book dealer and Paycocke's House custodian Simon Chance's life is thrown into disarray when his wife Robin leaves him after twenty years for another woman. She has come to terms with her secret past and walks out, hinting that Paycocke's has a creepy and undiscovered history, too. With reconciliation out of the question, Simon turns to their daughters Cassie and Alex for support, but they, too, harbour secrets. Simon's life is further complicated when Martin Sparrow, an ex-colleague he has not seen for a decade, turns up with revelations concerning a Roman manuscript unseen for two thousand years and a hidden agenda of his own. A meeting with local schoolteacher Eleanor Simmons leads Simon to question the history of the house, and his life is again complicated when he realises he is falling in love with her. Together they discover that Paycocke's House is not all it seems to be, and that episodes in its Tudor and Edwardian past have contributed to an underlying malaise which Simon must resolve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue for history lovers, 30 Dec 2008
A truly wonderful book for people who love history and love a mystery, full of interesting characters from Tudor times to present day whose lives weave a fascinating web whilst giving us glimpses in to the life of a glorious National Trust property. Excellently written conjuring up the different eras beautifully, a delight to read, difficult to put down and a joy to the very end.The Cleaving of Paycocke's

5.0 out of 5 stars History and suspense, 24 Jan 2009
By L. Lambert (Cheddington, UK) - See all my reviews

I really enjoyed this book. It is a mystery story and the feeling of suspense gripped me right from the start. The book is based around a fascinating house built in the 16th century and the author cleverly weaves the story through characters from the house's beginnings in the 16th century, Gustav Holst's family who stayed at the house in the early 20th century and the present-day. The history is well-researched and brought vividly to life. The major part of the book, which is set in the present, is realistic, entertaining and moving, and the end is satisfying. The 530+ pages were hard to put down. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 23 Jan 2009
By L. Wood - See all my reviews

A really well written story, a page turner and I couldn't wait to get back to it each time. The different eras added weight to the overall story and created suspense in the mystery of Paycockes. Its a great pity the shipping time on Amazon is so long, I feel this is detrimental to the success of such a good book. Go on order it, its worth the wait. Honest! Great news now in stock.
