Review

...a revelatory account of how the power and instant communication facilities of the internet can change the face of modern democracy." Best of British "David Hewson writes thrillers. Saved is a real life thriller, exposing the sham of "local democracy". A must for all those wanting to save their countryside and communities from the concrete mixers and the planning fixers." -- Robin Page, Countryside writer and broadcaster

Product Description

SAVED is the inside story of one of the biggest environmental campaign victories in recent years. It's the entertaining and occasionally shocking David and Goliath story of how a small village defeated a GBP1 billion plan to concrete over some of the most protected countryside in England.

5.0 out of 5 stars A village saved and an insight gained, 14 May 2007
By Kerrigan J. A. Bethel "mkjab" (Wye. England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'Saved' recounts the relative short but very intense struggle between a small community in rural Kent and the seemingly mighty forces of a major academic institute, aided and encouraged by both local borough and county representatives and their paid officials. The battlefield was a large chunk of an Area Of Outstanding Beauty adjoining the village of Wye which Imperial College London owns and wanted to develop with commercial units and housing.

This book tells of the spirited resistance, which was spearheaded by a website called 'save-wye' set up and run by journalist, Justin Williams and author David Hewson, which successfully brought about the demise of the ambitions to pour concrete over some of the most beautiful protected countryside in the South of England.

The reader is also given a rare insight into the behind the scenes machinations of local politics, unelected quangos and myriad of local government officers all combining in an attempt slip a major development under the radar of public scrutiny.

This book is invaluable for any community, rural or otherwise, whose way of life and environment is being threatened by seemingly overwhelming fire-power and resources.

David Hewson's book is extremely well written and holds your interest throughout.
