1.0 out of 5 stars an editor's disgrace, 19 Sep 2009
By P. D. Rayfield (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A lot of interesting material, told with enthusiasm, but all ruined by a publisher who can't get the most elementary things right. There are sentences with no main verb, apostrophes in the wrong places. Worse, the Russian names are hopelessly misspelled (often in many different ways) so that any reader wanting to follow up and read further will be frustrated. And there are appalling mistakes, such as Nijinsky being said to have been born in Poland (Kiev, his native city, was then in Russia). Where were the fact checkers, and why did nobody check the proofs? If the author doesn't know the language of her subject, she ought at least to get help from someone who does.

1.0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly bad, 24 Oct 2009
By A. Foster "andfos" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This really is an apalling book. The writing is second rate, but admittedly that is personal taste. What is unforgivable is the astonishing number of typographical errors (Russian names spelled differently in the same sentence), and factual mistakes (Nijinsky was 3 years YOUNGER than his sister Bronia! Even Bronia thought she was the youngest!). It's obvious that this was written to order - 2009 is the Diaghilev centenary, you must come up with something!) It's equally obvious that the author has no background knowledge of the subject. Save your money and buy a paperback copy of Richard Buckle's Diaghilev biography.
