Product Description
What awaits Jack, Annie and Davey when they are transported back in time to the gothic city of Prague, to search for their missing parents? Trying to avoid capture by the secret police, they find themselves running through dark and dangerous cobbled streets and meet some very shady characters. Where are their parents and who has stolen the key to the time machine? Alchemists, mythical creatures and a man with a hook for a hand hold the answers they're looking for. Will our young heroes be in time to save their parents from eerie Karlstein Castle? And even if they do, how will they return to the present day without the key?

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than a history lesson!, 24 Jul 2008
By M. Stone (Staffordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Roger and Kate Kettle travel back in time aboard a machine invented by Roger. When they are arrested as spies in Prague, 1903 - the hundred-towered city of the title - their three children follow, intent on rescuing their parents. From the moment they arrive, Jack, Annie and Davey are embroiled in a series of misadventures - some of them involving supernatural creatures such as the Golem - and they lose the key to the time machine. To cap off a bad do they're carted off separately into harsh servitude.

How they adapt to their new lives and engineer their parents rescue is the core of The Hundred-Towered City. The book takes a few chapters to gather momentum, but when Jack, Annie and Davey are split up, The Hundred-Towered City revs up and motors along at a fair old clip, right up until the last page. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing. , 10 Mar 2009
I very much enjoy Garry Kilworth's books, House of Tribes being exceptional, for example.

Unfortunately, this effort seems poorly researched, and rushed, with too much emphasis on "excitement" such as magical creatures and rescues and too little on plot, so that the parts which should have been exciting were really rather dull and rushed. To be fair to Mr. Kilworth it is a common problem that seems to be afflicting authors of children's and young adult literature, the substitution of form, and character development for frenetic action. It reads as though it were knocked off quickly to take advantage of the current market for Harry Potter clones.

That said, it was a moderately enjoyable bathroom read, I just don't believe it will grace the shelves of the libraries of the future. It may be telling that I got it for £2.99 less than a year after its release.
