4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and thoroughly enjoyable!, 22 Feb 2007
By P. Olphin (England) - See all my reviews

Considering the title and synopsis I started this book a little cagily but quickly became engrossed thanks to the super main character, Matt. He came alive and I warmed to him thanks to the charming way he introduced himself and made himself 'my friend'! The story progressed rapidly and became compelling - it took twists and turns one wouldn't expect and kept me reading until the end ignoring most other calls on my time. A charming but gripping tale, written beautifully and sensitively. More please!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BONE CRADLE: C E Trueman, 30 April 2007
By Carol M Lack (Colmworth, Bedfordshire) - See all my reviews
C E Trueman is certainly an author who has her finger on the pulse.

The Bone Cradle is aimed at the younger reader and not those who like me are moving towards a time of being eligible for Saga benefits. It is however a read not to be passed up by any age.

The story, based on ten-year-old Matt Walker's secret, covers so many topics and emotions. The child, who has experienced the death of a parent, is then obliged to accept a step-parent.

Then, an encounter with a man who is afflicted with an abnormality shows Matt's sensitivity to the humiliation and loneliness that such people suffer.

In this story Trueman has been able to incorporate so much in so little. She has kept the reader turning the pages wanting to discover ... what next?

In addition, there is a moral to the tale. One should not be quick to judge others by appearance or behaviour. Nor should we underestimate the perceptiveness of a child, even at the tender age of ten.

It can only be hoped that Trueman continues writing. And for those of an inquisitive nature, let it be prolifically! For me a sequel to The Bone Cradle has to be a "must".

The Bone Cradle is an ideal book for the child or person who can grasp the meaning of its messages, but has difficulty with, or reluctance to, reading. The ability and approach to reading may change after this story!

Carol M Lack

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Unusual Story, 1 Mar 2007

I loved this book from beginning to end. Sensitive, a bit scary, unusual and thought provoking - so many paths the writer took me down. A wonderful book and I shall definitely buy the sequel.
