4.0 out of 5 stars Just like the website., 20 Jun 2007

(REAL NAME)
This book, published by The Friday Project who specialise in converting popular websites into book form succeeds in its aim of giving you a pocket sized version of the might beerintheevening.com website.
The idea of the site is simple, it's a pub review site with thousands of pubs listed which anyone can join and then conrtibute their own personal idiosyncratic review to and give a rating out of ten to the pub in question which is then left there for the world to see. You get directions to the pubs, an overall rating and info about what features the pub has (food, pool tables, karaoke,etc.). The book gives a guide to a selection of the more favourably reviewed pubs(probably to avoid any lawsuits!)in the London area and includes a few reviews of each pub taken from the website.
As such it's a handy guide to pubs in London, reviewed by normal punters rather than professional critics and as such I believe a more reliable guide. Every man or woman has their own idea of what makes a good pub and the variety of different reviewers with their own concept of what makes a pub tick gives a good cross section of opinions on each boozer to help you decide if it's the right kind of place for you. Some reviews are detailed and earnest, some short and funny. All however help you sort out the wheat from the chaff without having to try each and every pub yourself.
I must confess to a slight bias as I have some reviews published in it myself, but I honestly would have bought it anyway as it is a good distillation of a top quality website.
I only hope that other regions get sister volumes and that in future editions some of the more negative (and normally funniest) reviews are considered for print as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket version of a superb website, 28 Mar 2006
If the book is anywhere as cool as the website then it'll be a treat. I can't think of a more useful online resource and well done to the authors who I know have toiled long and hard being forced to down pint after pint across the capital!
